What are the advantages of network managed PoE switches?

96 views author:AnHuiBoRui

Remote management is a feature that most branded network managed PoE switches have. Network managed PoE switches generally have simple network management protocols and can configure PoE parameters on their own. They can filter data addresses, ports, protocol types, services, etc., and usually also have VLAN partitioning and other functions. So, what else can network managed PoE switches do?

  1. PoE system configuration

PoE system configuration management is the core content of network managed PoE switches. By utilizing this feature, the PSE power supply system can provide users with intelligent power management, including power allocation, device power grading, PoE port switching, PoE port timed power supply, etc.

(1) PoE function enabled

Users can enable or disable the remote power supply feature of ports according to network needs. By default, the power supply function of all PoE ports is turned off.

(2) Configure the power supply for the port

Users can configure the maximum power output of the port based on factors such as the transmission rate, transmission distance, cable type, and diameter of the PoE switch port, and comply with relevant standards.

(3) Configure port power priority

Three types of port power priority can be set, from high to low: Critical High、Low。 When the power consumption of PD devices exceeds the total power that PSE can provide, PSE can prioritize power supply to critical devices according to the power supply priority of each port. If different ports have the same priority, prioritize them according to their port numbers.

By logging into the PoE management page of the network managed PoE switch, users can set the PoE function to be turned on/off, input power, maximum overload, reserved power, and more.

  1. Protection mechanism and monitoring

Standard PSE devices can automatically detect PD devices and only provide power to the detected standard downstream PD devices. If the downstream device is not a PD device, PSE will not supply power to the device.

PSE will also detect the power parameters of the downstream equipment and handle PD that exceeds the upper limit specified by the standard. The processing procedure of PSE is as follows:

The PSE provides power to the device. After power supply, if the PSE detects that its current is too high, its power management function will power off the port and give a certain penalty time; During the penalty period, PSE will not detect this port. After this time, PSE will re detect this port and repeat the subsequent process.

In addition, PSE devices can automatically detect abnormal phenomena such as port power failure, short circuit, overcurrent, etc. and turn off power output to protect PoE devices and ensure safe device use.

  1. Intelligent operation and maintenance

Network managed PoE devices with management functions can manage power through the network, remotely monitor and control power, and achieve automatic maintenance. Taking the UTOP Intelligent Management PoE Switch UTP3-GSW0802S-MTP150 as an example, the product has rich layer 2 network management functions, and can perform PoE power supply management and scheduled task management through the WEB interface. Among them, the PoE power management function can be set to stop supplying power to some office equipment during non working hours, which is environmentally friendly and energy-saving.
